Titanique Creator Has Another Gay Hit

Marla Mindelle is perhaps the funniest person I never met.

Co-creator of the immensely popular Off-Broadway juggernaut Titanique, she has left that long-running show and now stars in The Big Gay Jamboree, for which she also co-wrote the book and songs.

This new venture, currently scheduled through March at New York’s Orpheum Theatre, is just as ribald and insanely funny as Titanique, but it requires less backstory from the spoofed material to appeal to a greater audience.

Mindelle in this show plays a modern gal on the verge of getting married, but she wakes up in an old country musical town with Puritan values and four sisters with names that all rhyme with Flora.

While Mindelle’s Stacey loves a good musical, she doesn’t want to exist in this world that doesn’t seem welcoming of gay – yet they all do breakout in song and have gay characteristics.

For a small theatre production, this show is big in production numbers, sets and costumes as well as powerhouse vocals that could rival any Broadway show.

Mindelle is definitely the star and is always fun to watch shine in acting and song. She does, however, surround herself with a perfect ensemble, all trying to get their moment in the spotlight and succeeding.

In particular, Paris Nix as the townsfolk who is pigeonholed to be the town’s gospel singer. He does have a powerful voice that would make any hymn soar but is also is a great belter, actor and dancer who likely can make any him soar right out of their seats.

This was quite the surprise on my 7-day, 8-show journey to New York and hope this continues to find an audience the same way Titanique has – as both go above and beyond anyone’s theatre expectations.

I will continue to follow Mindelle’s career as she is worth seeking out. But for now, catch her at: https://biggayjamboreethemusical.com/
