Flurry of Furry Flicks Lead the Pack of Recent RomComs

There’s a flurry of gay RomComs at theatres or streaming and some of them involve furry and bear men. But whether a bear, a twink or a daddy, all of these movies have people looking for love.

I think this trend in gay love stories started two years ago when Bros was released by a major studio. While it didn’t find the crossover appeal they hoped, it did open the door. Perhaps Bros sexually frank – but not explicit – scenes turned off the straight boyfriends of its female audience. But it likely started a resurgence in gay love stories in any event.

Things Like This, starring bearish Max Talisman, who also wrote and directed, is coming out May 16 in theaters.  This movie seems like quite the cute one in which Talisman’s character Zack meets another man named Zack – so is this a match made in heaven…only time will tell.

But coming out this week on demand, and still in the theatres, is one of the most adorable, sweet, romantic and lovely movies ever – A Nice Indian Boy. This movie brings together shy and reserved Karan Soni  (Deadpool) and Tony Award-winning winning Jonathan Groff (Glee) as what seems an odd pairing but they complement each to make the perfect couple. Where the movie finds its conflict, is Soni’s reluctance to be himself and share his life with his family while Groff is a free spirit.

Everything about this movie is endearing and  it wins you over with sentiment and excels in the small, nuanched touches like the backdrop used in a wedding and its meaning as well as the intimate moment between Groff and Soni’s dad (played by Harish Patel).

Director Roshan Sethi and writer Eric Randall (from a play by Madhuri Shekar) have an instant classic on their hands.

Streaming at home in June, but at theatres now, is the remake of the Oscar-nominated The Wedding Banquet, which features Bowen Yang who is slowly becoming the Meg Ryan of gay movies. Besides this, he was in Bros and Fire Island – all love stories.

This movie is predictable for sure – maybe because I remember the original. But still fun and the updated characters are very refreshing. This time around we have two couples – a gay couple (Yang and Han Gi-Chen) and lesbians (Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone and Kelly Marie Tran). Both couples, for different reasons, need to pull off a ruse to have a wedding to make so many people happy – including the Department of Immigration. Fun for sure but groundbreaking…not so much. While we’ve mentioned it here before, we do want to add a shout-out to Sex Love Venice, which is now streaming at home. It’s a lovely look at the city of Venice through the eyes of smitten lovers – one of them is ultra furry Alexander Ananasso.
