Drag Race is serving us documentary realness!
VH1 has announced that they will be presenting a special documentary event which will follow the show and the season 13 queens as they taped the season during the global coronavirus pandemic, according to Out Magazine.
The documentary, entitled RuPaul’s Drag Race: Corona Can’t Keep A Good Queen Down, will be broadcast as a stand-alone episode. The episode reportedly “captures the raw emotions surrounding the extraordinary experience; from the combination of hope and anxiety of the early days, to creative challenges prepping and executing the show, and an ultimate sense of celebration and gratitude,” according to a release from Viacom.
The statement goes on to read, “In the face of a global pandemic that shutdown film and television production around the world, the resilience and ingenuity of this season’s queens made herstory as one of the very first productions to be shot in the age of [the pandemic].”
The special episode/documentary will feature more behind the scenes footage, including more interviews with season 13 queens and casting reels. The feature will also highlight what safety measures were taken by the staff in order to keep everyone safe, including the cast and guest judges and coaches.
In the preview trailer, cast member Symone exclaims “You thought Drag Race was gonna go away? No darling.”, while Kandy Muse proclaims “I’ve been tested, my hands are washed, I’ve been quarantined. It’s going to be an exciting ride!”
RuPaul’s Drag Race UK season 2 also acknowledges the effects of the coronavirus pandemic in its 5th episode, which takes place after a 7 month break from filming in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
