Australia & NZFront CoverInterviews

Tim Little, Don’t let his name fool you – he packs a punch on his disco stick. It’s everyone’s favourite radio jock and producer from JOY 94.9

He has been a radio personality since a very young age and has been on air on Australia’s only queer radio station, JOY 94.9, for just over ten years. You might remember him from some sexy radio shows, such as Hide & Seek, playing banging Trance on Saturdays with Beatz and recently as a co-host with JOY’s diverse Brekkie lineup on Wednesday mornings. He has also dabbled in DJing, a bit of modelling/acting, community advocacy, adult entertainment, and he has a secret corporate identity. He is like a sexy bear Santa daddy, Clarke Kent! And he is a proud cat daddy!

Luka Musicki (LM): When did you start producing on the radio waves and why?

Tim Little (TL): I started volunteering in community radio at the age of 13 at a youth station in Sydney, as I was eager to grow up and be like all the cool kids.

LM: What was the career like, and was travelling involved?

TL: Travels… I’ve travelled to Bendigo. Does that count? Hehe… I’ve led JOY’s outside broadcast of Bendigo Pride with my fellow Joy Brekkie co-host Brett. It was a really great experience to engage with the regional queer community and represent JOY. Oh, and Brisbane, I worked at a youth station in Fortitude Valley when I was “little” hehe. I was an assistant to the music director. I got to listen to all the incredible music before it was played (and I had peroxide blonde hair). That was a choice. Haha!

TL: Career… I’ve worked in commercial and community radio, as well as various other bits and pieces, including producing a flash mob for marriage equality in Melbourne.

LM: Would you say being a bear has helped or hindered your career? Is your audience primarily bears?

TL: Hmm, it’s definitely helped me get more sex… What was the question? hehe. Well, with Hide & Seek, JOY’s show about sex and sexuality, it’s important to show representation, and I like to “bear it all” on air, so to speak (and literally sometimes haha). In these times it’s important that we continue to talk about issues relating to sex and sexuality. As one of JOY’s most downloaded programs, Hide & Seek receives many messages from young people coming to terms with their sexuality, and they rely on us for information, which comes from our weekly podcasts. Simply Google “Hide and Seek JOY” for a full list of podcasts.

JOY Brekkie is a bit of fun on a Wednesday morning, but a bit more PG than Hide & Seek…actually a lot more PG haha!

LM: Is there any advice that you would give someone (like a bear) who is interested in starting a DJ career, and what is involved? I would like to DJ, and I have completed 20 hours of practice over the past two weeks. Do you think I am ready to be a tag-team DJ with you?

TL: DJing is such a broad term these days. Someone could hit the “sync” button and call themselves a “DJ”. My advice is to develop your own sound and learn how to mix beats effectively. From a radio perspective, a “radio DJ” should be able to present a narrative without sounding like they’re AI or have downed 10 red bulls! The best advice I ever received was “you have to sound more natural”. I didn’t know what it meant at the time but over the years I’ve realised that you don’t have to put on a good “radio voice” to be a good radio jock. You need to be able to listen, contribute, entertain and inform.

LM: Do you have any upcoming gigs that we should invest in?

TL: Hide & Seek – JOY 94.9 Tuesdays 9-10 PM

Joy Breakfast – JOY 94.9 Wednesdays 7-9 AM

Head to joy.org.au to find out more.

LM: What are your career goals for the future?

TL: I hope to produce more new and interesting content for our rainbow communities & beyond.

Luka Musicki: Thank you, Tim, for answering those in-depth questions.

LM: Here are some quickfire questions:

>Location: Melbourne

>Pronouns: He/Him

>Relationship status: Solo Polyamory – I’ve recently separated from my fiance. We’ve been best friends for 10 years and done radio together but living together wasn’t working. We’re still the best of friends and love each other dearly

>Favourite Drink: Beer

What type of guy are you into? Kind, funny, interesting, intelligent and a bit rough around the edges

>Favourite Cities/Vacation Spots: Mykonos, Madrid, Byron Bay

>Favourite Hobby or Pastime:  Speaking on the radio, going to the cinema, riding my scooter, spending time by the sea, brunch, dancing (badly) and learning Spanish.

Idea of a good date? Something that begins with brunch, a bit of sun, good deep conversation and ends with hot, connected sex.

>What do you look for in a guy? Kindness, lack of arrogance, confidence in his sexuality, funny and interesting. Must be a good kisser and have a handsome face. Love a good beard and body hair.

>Where can you find yourself? Website, Facebook, Instagram, etc...
