2026 Land Rover Defender: Perhaps the Sweet Spot for the English Car Maker

Staff writer Sam Gomez discusses the luxurious 2026 Land Rover Defender as well as the approaching holiday season. Check it out below!

An elegant and talented blend of off-road prowess and street cred with manners, the 2026 Land Rover Defender is a big boy who makes an entrance, impresses swimmingly and yet does not disappoint no matter what the assignment is.

Under the marquee name of Land Rover, there is Range Rover (the flagship brand), Defender (the middle child, if you will, and your clear choice for going off-road) and Discovery (the more ‘affordable’ label).

Under the Defender marquee, you have three choices:

Defender 90, which is a short wheelbase 2-door; Defender 110, a big, midsized SUV that has elegance and throttle; and Defender 130, an extended-length 8-seater that truly is an elevated limousine that starts at $73K US and truly glistens.

There is so much to love about the 2026 Defender.

For starters, the drive is so incredibly smooth. During a recent drive through the Rocky Mountains for a Halloween party, the dark winding roads and the deer that pop out of nowhere are enough to make the evening frightful.

The Defender drives so smoothly that the only thing spooky was the classic Halloween music coming from the sound system.

For a vehicle that starts around $65K US, you should expect the best drive possible, and of course, Land Rover delivers.

Plenty of room and comfort inside. If you are even considering a Land Rover, you have already done your research as to why this is a great car and why you would like to get behind the wheel.

I drove the 110 OCTA (the top shelf trim, seen here), and this is a very elegant, very capable and very expensive Defender of the open road:

This one has a 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbo, 626 horsepower, 553 pound/feet of torque, All-Wheel Drive and 22-inch wheels with a full-sized spare tire that blocks your rear view a bit.

You also get panoramic roof, rear privacy glass, power doors and mirrors and seats, heated leather steering wheel with heated comfy seats, a refrigerator in the center console and loads of other snazzy stuff which are all standard for your base price of $158K US.

And yet, there are a few notable downsides: Mileage is an average 17 mpg, which is not as great as rivals from Jeep, Lexus and Mercedes Benz.

Prices for the Defender are a bit high, compared to a similar lot. You are effectively paying for a badge (an impressive badge, sure), yet truly, you are getting so much than that.

Land Rover has a history and a heritage that continues to evolve (and improve) and carry with it a reputation for excellence.

If it had not continually delivered such quality and relevance over the decades, Land Rover would have long gone the way of the three-piece suit: snazzy from top to bottom, but few of them would still be in circulation, even for the most important days of their lives.

It’s November, and here in the colonies, Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away.

Time to start thawing your bird.

Over the years, holiday dinners have become a lot less formal. Few break out the China and even fewer go all out for a meal that harkens back to the days of I Love Lucy. But thankfully, we are not yet at the point of preparing a Snoopy Thanksgiving of jellybeans, popcorn and toast.

Start planning now to ensure that you will not be alone – unless that’s what you prefer. Start hunting around to see if there is an invitation you can wrangle. Be quick with an offer of a side dish or drinks and hors d’oeuvres.

Loneliness is an epidemic that also affects the Bear Community, not just straight men.

Don’t live in self-denial when you probably have more to offer than you realize.

Let us know how we here at Bear World can help. We are part of your chosen family.

We want you to also celebrate all for which you are thankful. On that note: Happy Days are Here Again was the campaign song for Franklin Delano Roosevelt when he won big at the ballot box and people were filled with joy, hope and the desire to party over how much better their lives would become now that a new wave of elected officials were in office.

I am feeling that today. So should you. That times are changing quickly.

Enjoy them.
