Marvel gags us with queer representation in latest episode of Disney +’s ‘Loki’

However, if you’re queer (as I suspect you might be), you may have already heard about it since fans have been sort of screaming it from their rooftops.
In the third episode of Disney +’s Loki, which was released yesterday, the titular character has confirmed what many had suspected early on — that he is bisexual! The character was already announced earlier this year to be gender-fluid, and it was confirmed in the second episode with the introduction of Lady Loki, one of Loki’s incarnations.
In Norse mythology, Loki, the shape-shifting god of mischief, has many forms, including many female forms. Al Ewing, the creator of the Loki comics, has always wanted to make sure this side of the character was not ignored.
In a 2014 Marvel comic entitled Loki: Agent of Asgard, Odin refers to Loki as “my son, and my daughter, and my child who is both”, an obvious acknowledgment of Loki’s gender-fluidity. However, it wasn’t until Disney + released its new series Loki on June 9 that the gender-fluid side of the character was really explored.
This led many to believe that, in being gender-fluid, Loki must have had both male and female lovers throughout time. In episode three of the series, their suspicions are confirmed during Loki’s conversation with Lady Loki, AKA Sylvie.
During the conversation, Sylvie says, “You’re a prince. Must have been would-be-princesses. Or perhaps another prince?” Loki responds to her question saying, “A bit of both. I suspect the same as you.”
Queer fans took to Twitter to celebrate the representation, and queer Loki director Kate Heron also took her celebration to the platform stating, “From the moment I joined @LokiOfficial it was very important to me, and my goal, to acknowledge Loki was bisexual. It is a part of who he is and who I am too. I know this is a small step but I’m happy, and heart is so full, to say that this is now Canon in #mcu #Loki.”
When asked about the recent confirmation of Loki’s gender-fluid identity and whether or not he was already aware of it from reading the comics, actor Tom Hiddleston, who portrays the character in the series, told Out Magazine: “I’ve known about the breadth of Loki’s identity since I was first cast as the character 10 years ago. Back then, I did a really deep dive into my own research and could see that not just in the comics, that’s always been there, but also in the history of the character across hundreds of thousands of years, there’s been a fluidity about Loki that I found really interesting and compelling and very much a part of the fabric of the character. It was really thrilling to get to touch on that this time around.”
