Sidekick Productions releases A Taste of Youth digitally and on Blu-Ray
The bear-centric horror film A Taste of Youth is now available for purchase on Blu-Ray and is streaming digitally, get the details below!
We previously covered the premiere of the movie back in 2024, check out that article by clicking here.
With all the controversies over the last few years around Digital Media vs. Physical Media, it’s still important regardless to support our own where we can. Now you can own A Taste of Youth, a fat-positive queer horror movie with themes of body dysmorphia, aging, and more on Blu-Ray and digitally!
On the eve of his 46th birthday, Mateo finds himself longing for the life that’s seemingly passed him by. Though he loves his husband, Calvin, he can’t help wishing he could do it all over again. Then, one night, he’s given that chance…
A must watch for fans of queer horror and 80s horror, A Taste of Youth is the world’s first fat-positive horror feature film. Featuring performances by writer Joshua R. Pangborn (HBO’s The Chair Company) and Rev. Yolanda (FX’s The Beauty), and directed by Pangborn and Nakia (NBC’s The Voice).

Joshua of SideKick Productions originally created an 8-minute short film back in 2020 during the pandemic called Wasted on the Young with no plans to turn it into a full length feature film. After the pandemic subsided a bit, he turned that short film into what we know today as A Taste of Youth.
Filmed across two weeks, Joshua then spent about 2 years editing and producing the film with the help of his crew. A Taste of Youth officially had its world premiere at The Ocktober Film Festival in Brooklyn, NY and was nominated for Best Feature, then was awarded the Audience Choice Award by the festival.
I will personally be buying the film on Blu-Ray as I actually make a secret cameo myself, and Bear World Magazine’s very own John Hernandez (also known as Stan The Mechanic) also makes a special cameo too!
I personally really enjoyed the film too as it covers some pretty heavy topics related to the bear / chub communities. I am also a huge horror fan, and it was quite refreshing seeing so many different body types in a horror movie.
I walked away from the premiere reminiscing on the themes and horror elements that ended with a thought provoking conclusion. I find that’s one of the most important elements in appreciating art of any form. Did you leave asking yourself questions related to your own life and experiences? A Taste of Youth did that for me, and I believe it’ll do that for you too.

“Pangborn’s interest in highlighting the various communities within the larger LGBTQI+ umbrella does not end with his message of body positivity. His film aims to draw the viewer’s eye to the kinky, the genderqueer, the asexual, and age-orientation diversity that is to be found within our world. It is all done with love and care and a clear respect for those who are often ignored or misunderstood by others.
We honestly can’t remember a time when a feature film has so thoughtfully placed an asexual character so front and center in the narrative. Not only that, but to depict them in such a nuanced way that allows for a full and thoughtful exploration of their identity.” Brian Finnerty of Macabre Daily
