Island House Key West: Celebrating 50 Years of Golden Hospitality

In 2026, Island House will celebrate 50 years as a cornerstone of gay travel, culture, and community. This is a milestone that reaches far beyond the walls of a single resort. Founded in 1976, the Golden Anniversary of Island House is shaping up to be one of the most significant LGBTQ+ events of the year honoring five decades of visibility, resilience, and unapologetic joy in the heart of Key West.

A Legacy of Visibility

The Island House story began in 1976, when owner Jim Camp purchased what was then known as Paul’s Apartments. He reimagined it as a welcoming space for gay travelers at a time long before LGBTQ+ travel was widely accepted or even marketed.

In 1999, the property entered a new era under owners Martin Kay and Jon Allen, whose vision helped elevate Island House from a beloved guesthouse to a global icon. Under their leadership, the property saw a series of strategic expansions:

  • 2000: Major renovations served as a turning point for the Island House Café, which secured a full liquor license, transforming it into a destination in its own right.
  • 2005: The property expanded with the acquisition of 418 White Street, further cementing Island House as a multi-building campus rooted in community and celebration.

The resort’s international reputation was solidified in 2007, when it was named Best Gay Resort in the World by the PlanetOut Travel Awards. Voted on by travelers and industry insiders, the award was won multiple consecutive years, setting a global standard for gay hospitality. In 2025, that honor was reaffirmed and officially rebranded as Best Gay Resort in the World (BGRITW) by the Spartacus Travel Awards, recognizing Island House’s continued leadership nearly two decades later.

Modern Growth & Stewardship

Recent years have only strengthened that legacy through continued investment and care:

  • 2022: The purchase of 1117 Fleming Street laid the groundwork for the Island Mates Manor next door.
  • 2023: A major property remodel was completed under longtime steward Bobi Lore, Jon Allen’s widow.
  • 2025: The official opening of Island Mates Manor celebrated the expansion of the Island House footprint while deeply honoring its roots.

These events will feature:

  • Gold-themed production and décor that transforms the iconic pool area.
  • Pool Boys dressed in locally designed gold outfits, highlighting Key West’s vibrant creative community.
  • Special guests and influencer-hosted weekends, creating visual moments built for viral social sharing and global livestreams.

These recurring parties will anchor the anniversary year, drawing travelers back month after month and building momentum toward the ultimate Golden Celebration Weekend.

The Golden Celebration Weekend: May 2026

The 50th Birthday Celebration Weekend will take place in May 2026, culminating the anniversary year with a three-day festival honoring the past, present, and future of the resort.

Hosted by Patrik Gallineaux of Stoli Vodka, the “Golden Birthday” weekend will welcome:

  • Long-standing journalist friends and supporters from across the decades.
  • Former staff, ad models, and longtime guests from the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.
  • Media partners from Spartacus, OutClique, QDigital, and leading LGBTQ+ digital creators.

Designed as a standalone destination event, the 50th Birthday Weekend is intentionally separate from Pride programming, allowing Island House’s specific story, history, and influence to take center stage.

A Stronghold of Gay Key West

For five decades, Island House has stood as a stronghold in the story of Pride. It hasn’t just reflected the evolution of gay culture; it has actively shaped it. Through the AIDS crisis, changing social climates, and shifting travel trends, Island House has remained a place where guests could hold hands openly, kiss freely, build lifelong friendships, and feel authentically themselves in a safe space.

As the team looks ahead, they are launching the “50 More” initiative, highlighting future-focused investments in property evolution, sustainability, and a deep commitment to inclusivity across all generations, races, and body types.

Island House is not a trend. It is not a moment. It is a living institution—still thriving, still evolving, and still leading.

Bear Weekends at Island House this year are in are Woof Week in April & Key West Bear Weekend in late October. Both hosted at Island House Hotel.
