Documentary shows trans student athletes ‘Changing the Game’ on Hulu this June

The game is definitely changing for transgender rights, and Hulu is here to bring awareness for Pride Month!

According to Variety, Hulu has acquired the rights to Changing the Game, a 2019 film which was directed by Michael Barnett and debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film will look at the lives of three transgender student athletes, and the obstacles they overcome. Hulu will premiere the film on June 1 as part of its celebration of Pride Month.

The film, which debuted at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, follows three high school students who are at different stages of their athletic and personal lives, and how each path is unique to the other. Each story comes from a different area of the country, therefore spans three very different and unique experiences. The teens are Sarah, a skier and teen policymaker in New Hampshire; Andraya, a teen track star in Connecticut who openly competes on the girls track team; and Mack Beggs, who made headlines in Texas after winning the Texas State Championship in girls wrestling as a boy.

Changing the Game is executive produced by Chris Mosier and produced by Clare Tucker and Alex Schmider. Tyler Strickland serves as the film’s music composer. The film will debut on Hulu as a director’s cut, complete with newly added footage and a new original song written and produced by Sebastian Fritze, Old Man Saxon and Tyler Strickland. The song is entitled “Chasing Dreams” by Gozé featuring Old Man Saxon and the talented singer/songwriter and trans activist, Shea Diamond.

Changing the Game won the Audience Award for best documentary at Outfest Film Festival and Frameline Film Festival, and has won numerous other accolades from various film festivals.  A review from Variety praised the film as a “must-see, especially for any uninformed parent raising a transgender athlete. Really, they are just kids growing into their voice, asking for the dignified adolescence they are worthy of.”

The film will be just one of Hulu’s growing list of recent documentaries, which also includes Hillary, Greta, Minding the Gap, Untouchable and Ask Dr. Ruth.
