Building Care: Mr. Bear Belgium’s New Solidarity Movement

When he stepped onto the stage last October and was elected Mr. Bear Belgium 2026, few could have imagined just how quickly his victory would transform into a movement. But for this year’s titleholder, the sash was never meant to be a personal spotlight, it was meant to be a starting point.

From the beginning, his campaign centered on a simple but powerful idea: LGBTQIA+ solidarity in action. Not as a slogan, not as a vague concept, but as something concrete, practical, and rooted in the longstanding spirit of care within the bear community. Out of that vision grew the Carebears, a developing collective of volunteer “bears with purpose” committed to helping queer people wherever help is needed.

“At its heart, the bear community is known for being welcoming, warm, and protective,” he explains. “I wanted to harness that energy, that instinct to care, and turn it into something structured and useful.”

A New Type of Community Volunteer Network

The mission of the Carebears is beautifully straightforward. Volunteers can sign up to participate in a range of supportive tasks, depending on their skills and comfort levels. These can be as simple as cooking for a summer camp for trans youth, helping widowed LGBTQ+ elders with everyday chores, setting up a stage for a queer event, or contributing to community safety and inclusivity at nightlife spaces and Pride celebrations.

No task is too small; no offering of help is insignificant. What matters is presence, kindness, and consistency.

The project officially opened registrations in December, and the response was immediate. The first workshop took place just last weekend, setting the foundation for a fully functioning group by May. The atmosphere, he says, was electric, equal parts training session and family reunion.

Local Roots, Global Interest

While the initiative is proudly Belgian, its reach has already traveled far beyond the country’s borders. “I was incredibly surprised,” he admits, “when people from Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, and France got in touch. They told me they wished they had something like this where they lived — that this was exactly the kind of queer support network they’d been dreaming of.”

The interest confirms what many in the LGBTQIA+ community have felt for years: grassroots solidarity is not only needed, but deeply desired. The Carebears represent a model of queer mutual aid that feels refreshing, grounded, and accessible — a reminder that community care doesn’t always require big budgets or complicated structures. Sometimes all that’s needed is willingness, compassion, and a few dozen bears with big hearts.

More Than a Title

As Mr. Bear Belgium 2026 continues to shape and grow this project, he sees the role not as a year-long reign, but as a catalyst for long-term change. “Being Mister is wonderful,” he says, “but building something lasting for the community, that’s what gives this title meaning.”

With the Carebears, he’s doing exactly that.

Warm, inviting, and undeniably powerful, this initiative blends the cozy spirit of the bear world with the radical tradition of queer mutual care. And if early interest is any indication, Belgium’s newest band of Carebears might just spark an international wave of community-driven queer solidarity.
