Bear Hair Professional by Jeremy Tuomala: Designed by a Bear for Bears

Jeremy Tuomala has over 16 years of experience in the hair industry. He studied the art of hair with some of the top leaders, taking every class he could find to grow his hair knowledge and experience.

He then utilized his expertise and special techniques to create his own unique method of doing hair, where he was able to perfect this style at various beach-city salons in Southern California for many years.

During the 2020 COVID pandemic, Jeremy and his husband, Robert Romero, decided to move to Vancouver, WA to be closer to Robert’s two children and granddaughter, and to settle into a slower way of life.

This led Jeremy to work at Big D’s Barbershop in beautiful downtown Vancouver, WA — The first gay owned and operated Barbershop in Vancouver.

This perfectly-timed opportunity, in a supportive environment, allowed Jeremy to start his Bear Hair Professional line of products. One thing that stood out to him most, was that he only liked a couple of products from each hair care line, requiring him to use multiple brands and combinations to get the desired looks he wanted to achieve with his clients.

This ultimately led Jeremy to use his extensive knowledge and expertise to create his “perfect” line of products, and that is how Bear Hair Professional was born!

One key factor in creating the Bear Hair Professional line is using natural ingredients to minimize chemicals. All Bear Hair Professional products are made with high-quality botanicals, nutrients, minerals, essential oils, and are water-soluble, non-GMO, paraben-free and gluten- free. There is no heavy build-up while providing an array of scents that are natural, yet subtle.

Bear Hair Professional products are also beneficial to improving the health of your hair and scalp. Jeremy is certain that his line has a product for all of your hair care and styling needs.

Bryce Quartz: How did you find yourself in the hair industry?

Jeremy Tuomala: Since I was in high school, I have always tried different hairstyles and colors. I had no idea this would turn into a career. Later in life, Anthony Defalco (owner of Anthony Defalco Professional Hair Products & Orange Coast Beauty Supply in Huntington Beach California), wanted to open a salon and have me help him run it. So, I decided to go to school to learn the business. I thoroughly enjoyed doing hair and quickly found I had a talent for it. Anthony has helped mentor me my entire career, including Bear Hair Professional.

BQ: What kind of cuts do you specialize in?

JT: I specialize in any type of haircut, from long to short hair, straight or curly hair. However, at this point in my career, my passion is doing all types of fades including straight razor fades.

BQ: Let’s talk about your products. What sets your products apart from others in hair care and styling?

JT: One key factor in creating the Bear Hair Professional line was using natural ingredients to minimize chemicals. All Bear Hair Professional products are made with high-quality botanicals, nutrients, minerals, essential oils, are water-soluble, non-GMO, paraben-free and gluten-free. There is no heavy build-up while providing an array of scents that are natural, yet subtle. The Bear Hair Professional line of products are beneficial to improving the health of your hair and scalp. In fact, I recently suggested to a client suffering from psoriasis on his scalp to try my “Clean Bear” Mint Cleanser with Tea Tree Oil and “Smooth Bear” Conditioner. After about 3 weeks of using it, he came back thanking me because his psoriasis started to clear up. Although not everyone will have the same results with skin conditions, I am glad to know it can help for some.

BQ: Where can the bears find and purchase your products?

JT: Bear Hair Professional products are available online at www.bearhairpro.com and in person at Big D’s Barbershop in beautiful downtown Vancouver, Washington. This is my home for doing hair. Big D’s is the first gay, woman-owned and operated barbershop in downtown Vancouver. The owner is Danilyn Wood (aka Big D) and her website is www.bigdsbarbershop.com. I am very grateful to be a part of this amazing team of hair professionals.

BQ: What has been one of the most rewarding things about being in the hair industry?

JT: The most rewarding aspect of being a professional hairstylist/barber is the satisfaction I get when I can help someone revamp their look or solve a hair problem they may be experiencing. Also, turning a bad day for someone into a better day. It’s amazing what a great haircut can do to turn someone’s day around.

BQ: Are there any new products on the way? What can we expect next from you?

JT: Yes, there are three new products in the works: Bourbon Hair & Body Wash, Tobacco Conditioner, and a Peppermint Beard Oil. As for what’s next after that, I am not certain. I wouldn’t mind expanding my product line to include skincare as well. I may even open my own barbershop one day. That has always been on my mind.
