Queer Rock & Roll Bear takes the stage in new musical
Move over Hedwig… Oso Fabuloso has entered the building!
Bears, and poppers, and rock music… Oh my! Theatre is getting beary interesting thanks to the bearrific new musical, ¡Oso Fabuloso & The Bear Backs!
INTAR and Radio Drama Network announced last week that The McKittrick Hotel, located at 530 West 27th Street in New York City, will present a late-night residency of their new musical, ¡Oso Fabuloso & The Bear Backs!
With a book and lyrics by C. Julian Jiménez, and music by P.K. Variance, ¡Oso Fabuloso & The Bear Backs! debuted at INTAR Theatre last summer to great critical acclaim. For over 50 years, INTAR has been amplifying Latinx voices, and this season will look to celebrate the artists and crew members of its last mainstage production, Bundle of Sticks by C. Julian Jiménez, before COVID-19 forced the closure of their theatre space.
In ¡Oso Fabuloso & The Bear Backs!, a Queer Latino bear named Oso Fabuloso has recently been dumped by a two-timing Daddy bear. In order to overcome his depression, Oso seeks the help of his therapist Dr. Calvo, who convinces him to use his gift of song to sing the blues away. Oso agrees to go on tour with his therapist/guitarist and his two best friends/backup singers, Gummy and Grizz, hoping it will cure him of his romantic woes.
The cast includes playwright C. Julian Jiménez as Oso, Joseph Distl as Grizz, Vasileos Leon as Gummy, and P.K. Variance as Dr. Calvo. Guitar and musical direction are by P.K. Variance with Robert Cowie on keyboards, Ray Rizzo on drums and Jesse Sklar on bass. Set and costume design is by Timmy Schues with sound and lighting design by Alberto Ruiz.
Initial performances will be offered on Friday, November 19, Saturday, November 20, Saturday, November 27, and Friday, December 3 at 11:00 PM. Doors open at 10:30 PM.
General Admission tickets are $35, Reserved Seats are $75, and front row Private Tables for two are $350.
