‘It’s a Sin’ breaks record at start of UK’s LGBTQ History month
February is LGBTQ History month in the United Kingdom, and it has started off with a record-breaking achievement!
According to Digital Spy, the moving and hard-hitting UK drama series It’s a Sin has broken a big All 4 record. The five-part drama, which was created, written and produced by former Doctor Who producer Russell T. Davies, follows a group of gay male friends and their fierce female ally living in London at the start of the AIDs epidemic of the 1980s. It was released on the Channel 4 streaming service in the UK on January 22, and has since garnered nearly unanimous critical acclaim.
On February 2, Channel 4 announced that the series has garnered over 6.5 million views on All 4, making it the biggest ever instant box set. The extraordinary stats also make It’s a Sin their third biggest series to date and most binged new series ever.
The premiere episode has also become All 4’s most popular drama launch on record. Now, that’s what we call some pretty amazing stats, especially for a show centered around the lives of queer characters! Not only is it centered around queer characters, but the diversity in its cast also makes this a particularly special and groundbreaking achievement.
The show’s critical success has contributed highly to January 2021 becoming All 4’s largest ever month of streaming, with over 91% more viewers than January 2020. During the show’s first week on air, the hashtag #ItsASin was also seen by over 83 million people.
“The extraordinary performance of It’s a Sin is a reminder that powerful drama with something important to say about the world can also be commercially successful,” stated All 4’s Chief Content Officer, Ian Katz.
He goes on to say: “It has also demonstrated how our strategy of box-setting shows on All 4 can bring a greater combined linear and digital audience to a show than a traditional release pattern.”
The monumental success of It’s a Sin comes just as the show is gearing up for its US release on HBO Max. The series will also be available on Blu-Ray and DVD later this month.
