Destination of the Month: Punta de Mita

Being that we are in cold February, I thought it be best to focus on a warm destination this month! Everyone is familiar with Puerto Vallarta in Mexico, but what about Punta de Mita?

Punta de Mita sits just north west of Puerto Vallarta and is a 45-minute drive from Puerto Vallarta airport. Punta de Mita is one of Mexico’s ultra-exclusive resort areas, and an ideal location to consider if you are looking for a very special get-away or if you are looking for an attractive location for ocean-front property in Mexico. The area is very lush with forest and mountains and beautiful pristine beaches. It’s definitely a romantic and sexy destination.

My husband and I fell in love with this destination, its beautiful, tropical, and the people are warm and friendly. We saw many other gay couples enjoying this area as well as it’s non-touristy and stunning.

Climate

Punta de Mita offers you year-round warmth. The rainy season is May to October, but as with most monsoon areas, rains tend to be fierce and brief in the late afternoon, leaving the evenings dry and cooled off. September brings the highest levels of humidity and sees the heaviest of the rains. By late October / early November, temperatures cool significantly from the later summer high temperatures and humidity.

Where to stay

There are 3 exceptional resorts in this area, all beachfront – The Four Seasons, The St Regis, and Imanta. The Four Seasons is the largest, however you get the feeling you’re staying at a boutique property. There are several pools, including a lazy river with a bar! And of course, beautiful beachfront areas to relax.

Four Seasons Hotel

The St Regis, has a beautiful grand entrance with an infinity pool overlooking the beach, and a casual restaurant ‘Mita Mary’ where you can sit with your feet in the sand and dine on fresh fish tacos and margaritas.

St Regis Hotel

Imanta is the most unusual of the 3 properties. It’s a secluded hotel in a 250-acre ecological jungle preserve overlooking the most spectacular beach around. This property is for those who want to have a complete escape from civilization and take in the beauty of nature. The property is a rustic, yet luxury paradise with the finest chefs around as it’s a Relais & Chateaux property.

Activities

Besides just relaxing, and taking in the sun, there are other activities you can take part in. All three hotels have exceptional Spas, so be sure take yourself to one and be pampered! The area also offers deep sea fishing and the anuual Sea turtle release. Sayulita is just 30 minutes away from Punta de Mita, it’s a small surf town full of charm and color. It has a very relaxed, bohemian feel with quaint shops and a slew of casual juice bars.

Eat

There are so many wonderful restaurants at all three hotels as well as in the small Punta de Mita town. Several new dining options have emerged, including authentic Mexican cuisine, sushi and teppanyaki grill, fresh seafood, nice tropical ambience and one of the region’s most renowned gourmet restaurants. All the restaurants are of high caliber, with many to choose from.
