Billy Porter, Zachary Quinto to voice gay dads in Disney+’s ‘Proud Family’ reboot

The Proud Family is taking the word “PROUD” to a new level!

The Proud Family was a popular Disney animated sitcom about a Black family called the Prouds. The show centered around the adventures of the family’s 14-year-old daughter, Penny Proud, and her group of friends. The show originally aired between 2001 and 2005 on The Disney Channel, and the theme song was sung by Destiny’s Child and Solange Knowles.

Disney has recently announced a reboot of the animated series last year, and, this week, has released some news that many of us didn’t see coming — Zachary Quinto and Billy Porter are joining the reboot as married gay parents, according to Out Magazine

The Proud Family will be revived as a new series entitled The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, and set to be released on Disney+. The series is reportedly bringing back the most of the original cast along with a few new names, including Quinto and Porter, both Pittsburgh natives, who are set to play Barry Leibowitz-Jenkins and Randall Leibovitz-Jenkins respectively. The couple are the adoptive parents of 14-year-old Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins, which is set to be voiced by Keke Palmer.

Also joining the cast will be EJ Johnson, the out son of basketball legend Magic Johnson. Johnson will be voicing the character of Michael Collins, who is Penny’s best guy friend. He is described as a “nonconforming trendsetter,” in an EW announcement about the casting of Quinto and Porter. He’s a basketball player and serves “fierce looks at school.”

The release date for The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder has not been announced, but all episodes of the original Proud Family are now available on Disney+.
