RuPaul signs deal with Sony to create more LGBTQ-focused scripted television
The RuPaul TV takeover is unstoppable!
According to Digital Spy, RuPaul has signed on for a major new deal that will see him create more scripted TV!
Even though Drag Race is everywhere, that still isn’t stopping Mama Ru! It has been announced that RuPaul has inked a first-look agreement with Sony Pictures Television to create character-driven queer stories focused on positivity, empowerment, humour and music — all the things that Mama Ru preaches about on Drag Race.
Under the new deal, the RuCo banner will develop drama, comedy and animated projects. Jay Marcus, former State Street Productions executive, will serve as head of film and television for the company.
RuPaul said in a statement: “Not only am I thrilled and honoured to join the Sony Pictures Television family, but I’m also extremely grateful for the opportunity to tell unique stories that push the conversation forward.”
Despite the fact that RuPaul’s last scripted series, Netflix’s AJ and the Queen, which RuPaul co-created and starred in, was canceled after one season, Mama Ru is no stranger to scripted TV. She has has been featured in numerous TV shows and films since the early 1990s, and has been performing even before then. Recently, RuPaul made history after Drag Race won the Emmy for Outstanding Competition Program, making RuPaul the most-awarded Black artist in Emmys history.
“Thanks to all of our lovely children on our show, from around the world,” said Mama Ru during the acceptance speech.
“They are so gracious to tell their stories of courage and how to navigate this difficult life, even more difficult today. This is for you. For you kids out there watching, you have a tribe that is waiting for you. We are waiting for you, baby. Come home to Mama Ru!”
We can’t wait to see what kind of queer stories RuPaul will create!
