Javier Bardem reveals he dressed in drag and sang to Daniel Craig
So, Javier Bardem once dressed in drag for Daniel Craig? Apparently so!
The actors got together for a recent episode of Variety’s Actors on Actors series, according to The Advocate. Javier Bardem stroked our curiosity a little bit, revealing that he and his Skyfall co-star, Daniel Craig, once celebrated their birthdays together. And this little piece of information just has our minds wandering in all kinds of directions!
Apparently, the pair’s birthdays are a day apart – Javier born on March 1st, and Daniel born on March 2nd. In the episode, the actors were discussing Javier’s experience with singing in his role as Desi Arnaz in Being the Ricardos. When Daniel asked Javier if he had any other singing experience before this role, Javier replied, “Well, apart from coming out of a birthday cake dressed like a Bond girl, not much!”
*Record scratch* Oh honey, we’re intrigued. Please tell us MORE!
Apparently, Javier Bardem not only jumped out of a cake in drag for Daniel Craig, but he also treated him to a song. “You were in drag,” says Daniel Craig, with a laugh.
“I was supposed to be the Bond girl that night, and oh, my God, I was!” said Bardem. “I sang ‘Happy Birthday to You’ in my best Marilyn Monroe impersonation as I could do.”
Not only did the two share this moment with us, but they also discussed THAT scene from Skyfall. Yes, THAT one. The one where Javier Bardem’s character, Raoul Silva, strokes 007’s chest and thighs while he’s strapped to a chair and being interrogated.
They discussed the homoerotic moment that had all our queer imaginations running wild: Silva says, “You’re trying to remember your training now … well, there’s a first time for everything,” to which Bond responds, “What makes you think this is my first time?”
*Record scratch, again* Oh honey, stop teasing us and just go all the way already!
Apparently, the scene almost didn’t make it into the film, because studio execs were afraid that it would be detrimental to 007’s image as a ladies man. This is according to a producer on the film, Barbara Broccoli, who shared the info in the Apple TV+ documentary Being James Bond. Thankfully, they were overruled and the scene stayed in the film.
Now… Where’s that birthday cake footage? We LOVE cake!
