Get Ready for the First Annual San Juan Bear Weekend!
Do the winter blahs got you down? Well perhaps a weekend with the bears in San Juan, Puerto Rico could help chase those blues away!
The first ever San Juan Bear Weekend is set to take place from February 6 to 9 and there is still time to book your trip and snatch up your tickets so you can join in on all the furry tropical fun!
Brought to you by Jorge Mdahuar (@jemnyc), the producer of the Bear World Magazine Award winning club night Bear Milk, San Juan Bear Weekend promises to be an amazing time.
“Attendees can expect a fun filled, relaxing vacation in the sun” Mdahuar told us. “Four days of events, carefully curated to showcase different parts of San Juan – from daytime events like beach and pool parties to nighttime gatherings at various queer venues so people can really get a taste of the city.”
The bear community in Puerto Rico is known to be very welcoming and inclusive. There are various venues in San Juan where everyone is welcome, but the main venue that caters to bears in San Juan is the El Purgatorio Bear Bar in Santurce.

One unique aspect of San Juan Bear Weekend is that since it will be the event’s first year. Everyone will be a newcomer and enjoy this intimate adventure together. The organizers are aiming to build a new community and to create new friendships that will hopefully last a lifetime with a focus on inclusivity, accessibility, and an event that is body positive and welcoming to all.
“I wanted to share beautiful San Juan with the bear community. I can’t believe there hasn’t been a bear weekend there yet!” Mdahuar said. “It is super welcoming and LGBTQ+ friendly, and it has everything! A gorgeous city with culture, the friendliest people, beautiful beaches and natural beauty all around you. It’s also super accessible. Flights are cheap, and you aren’t leaving the country either (if you’re coming from the US) so you don’t need a passport!”
“I have met so many great friends on the island over the years” Mdahuar continued. “Some of them are owners of the local queer businesses there, and that is when I realized I wanted to bring the bear community there to help support these businesses long term. I think it’s very important to support local queer spaces, now more than ever.”
The event will feature New York gogo bears Danny J, Jazzul, Nick and Hollywood in addition to the music from DJ Beargazer to get the party going.
