Fans will get more Yusuf and Nicky in Netflix’s ‘The Old Guard’ sequel
Who can forget last year’s hit action flick The Old Guard, which featured some timeless gay romance?
The film stars Charlize Theron as the leader of a group of immortal warriors who have fought to protect humankind for centuries. Her group of immortal warriors also featured two immortal gay lovers, one a Muslim and the other an Italian Catholic, who were both crusaders in the same war. And we loved every minute of it!
As far as fans were concerned, the two lovers, Yusuf and Nicky (Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli), could have definitely gotten more screen time. And it looks like that just might happen after all!
Recently, Charlize Theron told Variety that a sequel was already in the works. In fact, the script is already written, and is looking to begin filming early next year! When asked if Yusuf and Nicky would be returning, she replied, Oh yeah! They’re definitely there.”
No one can forget the classic clip when Yusuf and Nicky are captured and one of the captors asks Yusuf, “Is he your boyfriend?” The reply is something that will surely go down as one of the best comebacks in LGBTQ film history. Watch the reply below!
Even though we are pumped to see more Yusuf and Nicky, we are also excited for the film. The first film, which was based on a comic book by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, was reported to be a megahit for Netflix, pulling in over 72 million viewers its first weekend. It received positive reviews from critics, who praised the direction, action sequences and Theron’s performance.
The Old Guard also stars KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Harry Melling, Van Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. It was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film – Wide Release, but lost to Clea DuVall’s LGBTQ Holiday romcom Happiest Season — which is rumored to also be working on a sequel.
