Cuban drama ‘Sin La Habana’, a beautifully-crafted collision of cultures and desires
An Afro-Cuban couple, desperately searching for a way out of Cuba, meet a lonely Iranian-Canadian woman searching for adventure in paradise, and their entire plan derails when real emotions get involved. Sin La Habana is a story about the lengths people will go to follow their dreams.
A beautifully-crafted collision of cultures and desires, from director Kevah Nabatian, holding its International Premiere in competition at the 38th Miami Film Festival, Sin La Habana will hold both a premiere at the Silverspot Cinema, with director Kevah Nabatian in attendance, on Sunday, March 7 at 2:30pm ET, and will be available for virtual viewing on March 8 at 12:00pm ET.
“I’m thrilled to present Sin La Habana at the Miami Film Festival for its International Premiere”, said Nabatian. “Not only is Miami a great festival, it’s really important to me for this film, about a Cuban immigrant in search of a better life, be seen in the context of a city that has been so deeply influenced by Cuban immigration. And the fact that I’ll be there to show the film in person during these crazy Covid times is really meaningful.”
Leonardo and Sara, a young Afro-Cuban couple, are desperate to leave the island. They decide that the best way to emigrate is for Leonardo to seduce a foreign woman, get legal status in another country, and then send for Sara.
The woman they choose is Nasim, an Iranian-Canadian divorcée who is running from an oppressive past and yearning to have fun for the first time in her life. When Leonardo convinces Nasim to marry him, he is able to move to Montreal, but his plan derails when real emotions get in the way.
Shot in Montreal and Cuba, and written in collaboration with Cuban hip hop legend Pablo Herrera, with sound design done by Oscar-winning sound designer Sylvain Bellemare (Arrival), Sin La Habana stars Yonah Acosta Gonzalez, a former Principal at the English National Ballet and the nephew of Afro-Cuban ballet superstar Carlos Acosta and current Principal at Bayern Staatsballett in Munich, alongside accomplished co-stars Evelyn Castroda O’Farrill and Aki Yaghoubi.
Sin La Habana had its world premiered at the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma in Montreal, where it won the Prix de la Distribution.The film also swept the awards at the Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival. The film will hold its International Premiere at the 2021 Miami Film Festival, and continue to play fests throughout the year.
