AJ McLean of The Backstreet Boys demonstrates trans allyship with new video
In the video for his new single “Love Song Love,” AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys has decided to make a bold statement as a trans ally, according to Edge Media Network.
In the beautiful video, which premiered this week on Variety, AJ appears in drag accompanied by numerous trans performers, including models Carmen Carrera and Nahla Wyld. Dressed in flowers, nail polish and feather boas, AJ demonstrates his fierce allyship as he dances around a large doll house.
A longtime LGBTQ advocate, the video, directed by both AJ and former Janet Jackson choreographer and collaborator Rene Elizondo, falls right in line with the singer’s core values.
“Now, more than ever, my trans and non-binary fans’ rights and very existence are being attacked in politics and in the streets,” McLean told Variety.
“What’s happening is unacceptable. I’m an ally and this song, to me, screams ‘love no matter what.’ It’s about loving and respecting one another.”
Speaking out about current events surrounding violence and hate being directed at the trans community, he states: “The transgender community has been getting pushback for years. Things are starting to change and with the new administration, there’s more open-mindedness, which is how it should’ve always been because it really doesn’t matter if you were born a boy, but have always been a girl. But there’s a long way to go.”
He also acknowledges the current generation and how outspoken they are when “using their platforms to speak out about negativity, judgment, racism and hostile acts towards minorities and the trans community.”
“It gives me hope for my kids’ generation,” he adds.
