2022 Mazda CX-30: A Solid Sub-Compact SUV for Bears
The Mazda CX-30 started life as the Mazda 3 and since then has added a few letters and a few pounds, just in case you were wondering.
I really do have a hard time keeping track of the alphabet soups that car manufactures create for car names. For me, it was easier when cars came from The Galaxy, or were downright animals, like Impalas or Cougars. Or just run-of-the-mill Fiestas. Or Fairlanes. Well, those days are gone, as are the days when you could openly call same-sex lovers hostile names in civilized countries (we hope).
The 2022 Mazda CX-30 is a class leader when it comes to small-ish SUVs. U.S. News and World Report has it as its #1 in Subcompact SUVs, citing a first-rate cabin, lots of standard features, a well-mannered ride and spry handling. (With, admittedly, a slight learning curve on the infotainment controls and so-so acceleration.)
Starting at $22,500 US (good luck finding one at that price), this year’s CX-30 is just right if you are indeed a human who is just the right size, which means, gentlemen, make sure you can get in to see how you fit.
Mileage is 24 city / 31 highway. All-Wheel Drive is standard on all trims. Turbo included on all trim levels.
Admittedly, the drive is easy breezy. This is one cool vehicle where you barely notice any distractions when cruising to anywhere. Sometimes, after a long day or a particularly tough meeting, even your car can get you rattled. The drive of the CX-30 may actually help lower you stress levels (a bit, maybe).
The interior is pretty classy. Simple, but classy. While not dripping with leather or etched steel, you do get a feeling of elegance, and that does make everything nicer.
The week I spent testing it (yes, I had the super snazzy Premium Plus trim – really nice), I had a lot of errands to run, so I won’t lie to you: it could have really gone haywire had even the slightest thing gone wrong, like, ya know, they were out of jalapenos for my afternoon nachos. Yet for all the stops and fits and starts of the week, the Mazda CX-30 did beautifully.
Just imagine how great it would have been if the love of my life had been along for the ride….
For just getting around town, for just trying to live a day-to-day life, this is a subcompact worth your consideration. That said, be sure it meets your needs. The backseats can be considered a little pinched for many. Sure, maybe your parents or grandparents can get in there just fine. Hey, just saying that you need to consider all these factors…
There are so many considerations to take into account when buying a new car these days. Namely, can you afford it. I think the 2022 Mazda CX-30 is a good place to start your research. But, please…. Get in first.
And just like the Chicken Dance, wiggle your butt a bit and make sure it works for you.
